Pin Grading

The grading system for pins varies from maker to maker. Our pins are graded using the "arm's length" method. This means the pin is held at arm's length and inspected for any defects. If there is a defect on the pin, it is graded depending on whether or not it is visible at a glance from an arm's length distance. We do not grade the backing or sides of pins unless there is a major issue with the metal or posts.

No pin is perfect and therefore, I do not promise "perfect" collector's grade pinsEnamel pins are handmade and due to the nature of handmade products, small defects are a very common and normal part of the process. Please read the grading system carefully before purchasing to figure out which one best suits your needs. By purchasing the pin in their respective grade, you agree to the corresponding potential conditions listed below.

Metal Enamel Pin

✦ Standard
Standard pins have little to no imperfections. Any imperfections are minor and can only be seen up-close, tilted at an angle, or in direct lighting. Minor imperfections include, but are not limited to:

  • Tiny bubbles on plating or enamel
  • Light scuffs or scratches on metal or enamel
  • Positioning of metal lines may vary slightly (Within reason)
  • Slight underfill, overfill, or uneven areas in enamel
  • Tiny marks or dots in non-central areas of the design
  • Slight darker flecks of glitter and/or small specks of stray glitter
  • Positioning of printed details may vary slightly (Within reason)
  • Printed details may have small marks or edge imperfections
  • Minor flaws around the edges

✦ Seconds ✦
The purchase of a Seconds pin is final. Seconds are sent in the original small plastic bag provided by the manufacturer and will not come with a backing card. Second pins are still beautiful, but have imperfections that are more noticeable when seen at arm's length. Flaws include but are not limited to:

  • Air bubbles, dust, debris or paint specs in central areas of the design
  • Noticeably misaligned or scratched screen printing
  • Noticeable underfilled, overfilled, uneven, or missing enamel
  • Slightly smudged and dirty enamel or screen printed details
  • Tarnished, burnt, heavily scratched, or discolored plating/metal
  • Noticeable scratches, chips, or holes in the enamel

✦ C Grades ✦

Only available in-person at conventions in our discount bin. Flaws included are the same as B grades, but much more severe.

Dyed Enamel Pins

Due to the painting manufacturing process of dyed enamel pins, these will often have more imperfections and therefore the range for acceptance in their quality will be larger as well. Dyed pins will be sold as Standard (Mixed Grade) and Seconds (Mixed Grade). As mentioned above, all pins are handmade and imperfections are a natural part of this process. Again, please be mindful that I do not promise "perfect" collector's grade pins and due to the nature of these pins, the mixed grading may not live up to one's strict "perfect" standards.

✦ Standard (Mixed Grade) ✦

These pins are a mix between the Standard and Seconds grading of metal enamel pins. They are not usually completely flawless, but the imperfections are not large and/or visible enough to be deemed lower grade. Most of the imperfections are miniscule or can only be seen in direct lighting or at a tilted angle. Flaws include but are not limited to:

  • Tiny air bubbles, dust, debris or paint specs in central areas of the design
  • Slightly misaligned, smudged, or scratched screen printed details (Within reason)
  • Recessed parts of the pin are not stamped as deeply as they should be.
  • Slight scratches, chips, or bumps in the metal

✦ Seconds (Mixed Grade) ✦

The purchase of a Seconds pin is final. Seconds are sent in the original small plastic bag provided by the manufacturer and will not come with a backing card. These pins will have much more noticeable flaws that can be seen. The flaws are more severe variations of the examples listed above.
